When the Railway Carried the Crown
SJ’s old emblem was more than an ornament: the winged wheel beneath a royal crown signalled that the railway belonged to the state. The symbol dates back to the nineteenth century and is documented in a version from 1906 – a time when public authorities liked to display their place in the state apparatus with precisely the crown.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old photograph by a traveler reading the newspaper Nya Norrland in 1945. The man is on board a passenger train with Statens Järnvägar, SJ , - whose first logotype we see on the carriage. Nya Norrland was a social democratic daily newspaper that was published from 1907 to 1999.

The photo was taken on August 4, 1945 by Eric Lundquist.
