A tale entirely in rhyme
The illustration belongs to the opening of the original 1939 edition. Beskow did not give the image a separate caption, but wove it into a fully rhymed tale: the first four lines already establish the story’s rhythm, which then drives the entire adventure forward.

The story behind the motif

Ocke, Nutta and Pillerill is a children's book and rhyming tale by Elsa Beskow from 1939.

The book is about the two acorn children Ocke and Pillerill who one day suddenly blow away on a leaf. Their friend, the hazel girl Nutta, sets off together with the kind squirrel to look for her missing friends. On the adventure we encounter elves and goblins, as well as other funny characters such as a teasing magpie and two resourceful chestnut boys.

In this illustration we see the hazel girl Nutta in the forest sitting on a large toadstool. She seems to have made contact with an elf who peers out of her home. Next to the house we see a snail on a leash, which is probably Santa's pet.

Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
