Natural History for Every Estate
The plate belonged to a separate suite on nests and eggs in Lorenz Oken’s vast natural history. The book bore the unusual subtitle “for all estates”: the idea was that natural science should reach far beyond universities and collections. When the volume of illustrations appeared in 1843, the series had grown to 13 volumes and an atlas.

The story behind the motif

Poster with motif of the illustration Uncooked Eggs created by the German Lorenz Oken. 

Oken was a German natural scientist, philosopher and physician. He was born Okenfuss, but changed his name to Oken during his medical training in Freiburg, Bavaria. After being professor of medicine at the University of Jena, he devoted himself to philosophy and natural sciences and was editor of the controversial journal "Isis" for almost 30 years. 

Oken was known for his prolific writing and published many philosophical treatises during his lifetime. His most famous work is the 13-volume series "Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" (Natural history for all walks of life), first published in 1831.
