Natural history for all social classes
This plate belongs to the atlas that complemented Lorenz Oken’s great natural history in 1843. By then, the work had grown to thirteen volumes, published between 1833 and 1841, and explicitly addressed “all social classes” – an ambitious attempt to make the order of natural science accessible far beyond the universities.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old fashioned scientific illustration Oken Naturalia created by the German naturalist Lorenz Oken. At the top of the picture it says SCHÄDLICHE GIFT-PILZE which is German and means "Harmful and poisonous mushrooms". Below we see several different kinds of mushrooms, including different fly agarics, devil's mushrooms and stone morels.

Oken was a German naturalist, philosopher and physician who was born Okenfuss, but adopted the name Oken during his medical training in Freiburg, Bavaria. 

After being professor of medicine at the University of Jena, he turned to philosophy and natural science. Oken became a leading figure as editor of the influential, and sometimes controversial, journal Isis, where he was active for almost 30 years. 

Oken was known for his prolific writing and published many philosophical treatises during his lifetime. His most famous work is the 13-volume series "Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" (Natural history for all walks of life), first published in 1831.
