The Palm as a Woody Plant
In 1843, Lorenz Oken placed palms in his sixth plant class, Holzpflanzen – woody plants. In his great pictorial atlas, the entire plant kingdom was arranged as a natural-philosophical ladder rather than according to modern botany. The classification has long been superseded, but the plate captures a time when nature was still to be fitted into one grand system.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Oak plant - a beautiful German illustration with various palm trees from the 19th century. The picture shows different types of palm trees, fruits and leaves.

Lorenz Oken, the artist behind the work, was a prominent German naturalist and biologist. He collaborated with the engraver Johann Susemihl to produce a comprehensive encyclopedia called "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" (General natural history for all classes of society) between 1839 and 1841.

The encyclopedia was published in seven volumes and its aim was to make science accessible and interesting to a wider audience by including illustrations of both animals and plants. These high-quality prints gave readers a visual understanding of the biodiversity that Oken explored and described.
