The story behind the motif

Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month, for example "January begins the year, February comes next, March, April has a bud in the hair". It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.
In the book it says: How yellow you are, October, how yellow and neighborly you are! In reddest cinnabar thy brush can paint. In gold and red you sizzle to make autumn happy. See the maple, how it flares with its red leaves! Stay, all gold that shines, and fall not too soon! When you're gone, you freeze, and everything is dark and bare. Fall slowly, yellow pennies, on fence, rock and log! We still want to avoid gloves and a woolly winter coat.
Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
