The story behind the motif
Poster with an illustration from Elsa Beskow's saga Olle's ski trip which was published for the first time in 1907.
Olle has received a pair of skis as a Christmas present and sets out on his first skiing trip in the forest. The picture shows the meeting with the old woman Tö, a personification of dewy weather, which symbolizes the arrival of spring.
Gumman Tö, dressed in a brown hood and carrying a broom and an umbrella, walks through the snow. In the fairy tale, she represents the power that melts the snow and ends winter, which is contrasted with Uncle Rimfrost. The motif captures her fight against winter and how she slowly but surely breaks down the cold season.
Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
