A Harvest Record in Oil
A discreet inscription serves as an eighteenth-century harvest report: five oranges were said to have ripened in the orangery at Ulriksdal on 4 December 1733. The largest were reportedly 40 lod – roughly half a kilo each. David von Cöln thus turned the painting into a document of an unusual horticultural feat.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting of an orange tree in an urn from 1733 by the Swedish artist David von Cöln. The painting was acquired by the National Museum from Gripsholm Castle in 1866.

The orange came to Sweden as early as the 16th century, but it was only during the 20th century that it became popular with the general public. The word orange comes from the German word Apfelsine which means "China apple". The term was coined by the Germans and refers to the fruit's exotic origins far in the distance.

Artist: David von Cöln | Created: 1733.
