Oregano by Another Name
In the 1830s *Medical Botany*, the species was called “Common Marjoram” in English, while “Oregano” was listed among the foreign names. Plate 131 belonged to a work on plants from the pharmacopoeias of London, Edinburgh and Dublin – the kitchen herb thus also had a place in the medical reference works of the time.

The story behind the motif

Poster with motif of the illustration Origanum vulgare, also known as oregano, from the 19th century.

It is native to the Mediterranean area but has become naturalized in many parts of the world. Oregano is well known for its aromatic, slightly bitter leaves, which are often used as a spice in especially Mediterranean and Italian dishes.
