When the poster went up on 21 June 1890, the Hippodrome de la Porte Maillot offered more than horse racing: the Grand Prix promised a diamond rivière worth 20,000 francs. Admission was more down to earth—a franc for the grass area, two for the grandstand.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Paris Courses created in 1886 by French artist Jules Chéret (1836- 1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.

The poster Paris Courses promoted a performance at the Hippodrome de Paris, a popular entertainment venue that featured circus, acrobatics, and other spectacular acts. The image depicts a woman in a white and red polka-dotted dress riding a horse. In the background, figures of several people riding horses can be seen, seemingly illustrating a competition.

A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
