The story behind the motif
Canvas print with the beautiful painting Paris Street created in 1877 by Gustave Caillebotte - a French impressionist painter. Caillebotte was part of the Impressionist circle and exhibited at several of their joint exhibitions.
The intersection we see in the photo - located a few minutes from the Saint-Lazare train station - represents the changing urban environment of Paris from the late 19th century. Gustave Caillebotte grew up near this district but then when it was a hill with narrow winding streets.
As part of a new urban plan, these streets were re-laid and their buildings demolished during the artist's lifetime. In this monumental cityscape, considered the artist's masterpiece, Caillebotte captured a grand modernity, complete with life-sized figures strolling in the foreground wearing the latest fashions.
