Fruit as a government commission
In 1910, specimens of the Bosc pear were sent from Medford, Oregon, to the United States Department of Agriculture. There, J. Marion Shull painted them for a government image archive, whose watercolours could be printed in reports and bulletins for growers. The image was therefore also a tool for identifying and comparing fruit varieties.
