The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Peacock and Dragon by William Morris from 1878. The richly ornamented textile pattern combines animal motifs with dense foliage and was created in heavy wool to give interiors the warmth and splendor Morris associated with older tapestries.
William Morris (1834–1896) was a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and often sought inspiration in older craft traditions and international ornament. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes Peacock and Dragon as one of his most popular patterns among contemporary customers; it was offered in five different colorways. That same year, Morris had seen a magnificent room from Damascus, which partly inspired the exotic expression. The combination of history, bold forms, and calm rhythm makes the motif a striking decorative work even in a modern interior.
