A Suit Made by Many Hands
When the book was first published in 1912, it was also a lesson in labour and supply chains. Beskow makes every stage – from wool and carding to dyeing, weaving and sewing – depend on someone receiving help in return. The simple tale captures a time when clothes could still be followed all the way from raw material to finished garment.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful illustration from Elsa Beskow's children's book "Pelle's New Clothes" which was first published in 1907.

The picture shows an elderly woman watering flowers in a lush garden while a boy stands nearby holding a sack. They are surrounded by colorful flowers and a small house can be seen in the background. The woman smiles warmly at the boy, which creates a feeling of care and community.

Pelle's new clothes is a classic children's book about Pelle, a little boy who dreams of getting new clothes and goes through a learning experience.

Elsa Beskow (1874–1953) was a Swedish writer and illustrator who became one of the country's most influential picture book creators. Beskow was known for his warm depictions of children, home and nature. She often illustrated her own texts and her visual world has a strong connection to everyday environments and romantic nature.
