The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Utagawa Hiroshige’s color woodblock print Plum Garden at Kameido from 1857.
A sturdy plum tree trunk fills the foreground, while visitors appear farther away in the garden beneath a reddish sky. The unexpected close-up view and bold cropping make the motif one of Hiroshige’s most innovative.
The work is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The image later became famous through Vincent van Gogh’s painted interpretation from 1887.
