Two studies before the painting
Two surviving preparatory studies in the National Museum’s collection are connected with the painting. One shares its paper with a sketch of a horse and cart, the other with figure and portrait studies – a small archival trace of Christian Krohg working things out before the painting, probably in 1879.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Port a little" by the Norwegian artist Christian Krohg (1852-1925) who is known for his realistic depictions of life in Norway, especially in marine paintings and socially engaged works. 

The painting was made in 1879 and depicts a maritime scene where a man in rain gear stands on a boat or ship and points out over the water.

Christian Krohg studied at art academies in Oslo and Paris and became a leading figure in Norwegian realism. Krohg was particularly noted for his marine paintings and portraits, as well as his works that highlighted social issues, such as The alcoholic (1885). In addition to his artistry, he was also a committed journalist and writer who fought for workers' rights and social justice.
