The painting is a portrait of Hans Jæger who was a Norwegian writer, social activist and anarchist. He was a controversial figure in Norwegian intellectual circles and was known for his critical view of society. Jæger was a friend of Munch's and was also a common subject for Munch's paintings.

He is best known for his dramatic paintings that reflect anxiety, death, loneliness and human existence. His work had a major impact on both Symbolism and Expressionism, and his work continues to be both loved and debated around the world.
