The Poster Became a Collector’s Item
Even when it was launched, Chéret’s Dubonnet poster was also advertised as a collector’s item. In the journal Le Courrier français, copies of the new poster were offered directly to “amateurs” for 5 francs—the advertising image thus immediately became something one could buy for the wall, not merely encounter in the street.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Quinquina Dubonnet created in 1895 by French artist Jules Chéret (1836- 1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.

In the center of the poster is a young woman dressed in a green dress and a green hat. In one hand she holds a bottle of Dubonnet aperitif, and in the other she holds a small glass that she looks at admiringly. The poster is an advertising poster for Quinquina Dubonnet.

A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
