When the Match Became an Export Commodity
The word “Rainproof” was a sales promise for an industry that turned Swedish matches into a global commodity. At Vulcan in Tidaholm, both paraffin-coated matches and storm matches were produced, and in 1903 the factory merged with other Swedish manufacturers in Jönköpings och Vulcans Tändsticksfabriks AB.

The story behind the motif
Poster with antique match label from the brand Rainproof from Vulcan's match factory in Tidaholm. Two birds huddle under an umbrella, indicating that the matches would be rainproof. On match boxes that were produced in Sweden in the past, labels were affixed that showed which match factory and brand made the matches.

The labels were adapted to the market the matches were intended for and as matches were a major Swedish export, matches were distributed all over the world and the motifs varied greatly to suit the clientele.
