The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Repose from 1895. The painting was created by John White Alexander, who was an American portrait, figure and decorative painter and illustrator.
Alexander lived in Paris during the 1890s and achieved international success with his studies of female figures gracefully posed in elegant interiors. In this painting, the provocative facial expression and supple curves reflect the contemporary French taste for sensual images of women.
With the model draped decoratively in a swath of white fabric, Repose was hailed in a French newspaper as a depiction of Loïe Fuller (1862–1928)—the American dancer known for manipulating swirling folds of silk in her performances at the Folies Bergère in Paris.
