When Sport Became Ideology
The sculpture belongs to the Stadio dei Marmi, built from 1928 to 1932 as part of Mussolini’s Foro Italico. The arena is surrounded by 60 marble athletes, each four metres high, donated by an equal number of Italian cities – an antiquity-inspired backdrop for the regime’s ideas of strength, discipline and national unity.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph taken in Rome in 1968 by Sjöberg / KG Kristofferson. The photograph captures a monumental stone pedestal in the foreground dominating the image, while a lone man in a suit moves across the wide steps far below.
