Before the Railway Reached the Valley
When the picture was taken around 1920, the railway had not yet reached Åndalsnes. Just four years later, on 29 November 1924, King Haakon VII opened the Rauma Railway through Romsdalen – the connection that linked the valley to Norway’s railway network.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful photograph of Romsdalen , taken by Anders Beer Wilse. In the photo we see two hikers standing in front of the fantastic view.

Romsdalen is located in Norway and is a narrow valley that stretches between high mountains, from Åndalsnes in Rauma municipality to Lesjaskogsvannet in Lesja municipality. The river Rauma flows through the valley.

Anders Beer Wilse was a Norwegian photographer who documented Norway in the early to mid-20th century and also worked in the United States. Wilse was born in Flekkefjord, but grew up in Kragerø and decided early on to become a sailor. After graduating from the technical school in Horten in 1882, he emigrated to the United States in 1884.
