The story behind the motif
Poster with the wonderful painting Rotterdam Ferry-Boat , painted by the British artist William Turner in 1833.
In the picture we see a fantastic sky bordering a dark sea, full of sailboats - including the Rotterdam ferry crossings. Rotterdam port in Holland connects with Hull in England where these ferry crossings serve as means of transport.
William Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. His art is among the world's most valued. In 2009, his painting was sold The Temple of Jupiter Panellenius for the equivalent of SEK 103 million, which is the second highest amount paid for a British work of art.
Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) | Created: 1833.
