When the poems gained pictures
Rumpali Nord was created for the lavish illustrated edition of Runeberg’s *Fänrik Ståls sägner*, published in instalments from 1898 to 1900. Edelfelt had begun the illustration work as early as 1894 and produced the series at a time when stories of the Finnish War were becoming an important part of Finland’s national self-image.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful portrait painting created by Albert Edelfelt. The painting depicts the fiddler Rumpali Nord dressed in uniform and played on a marching drum.

Albert Edelfelt was a Finnish-Swedish painter and illustrator. Edelfelt was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame.

As a 19-year-old, Edelfelt went to Antwerp in 1873 to study history painting. He then continued his painting studies in Paris, where in 1800 he received, among other things, a medal for the painting Ett barns likfärd (1879).
