The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the Japanese color woodblock print Ryū shōten by Ogata Gekkō from 1897. The title can be translated as “The Dragon Ascends to Heaven.”

The motif depicts a dragon or serpent-like creature rising through the clouds toward the summit of a mountain. The image is part of the series Gekkō zuihitsu and combines dramatic movement with a distinctly vertical composition.
