A Day on Glass
On 3 July 1919, the moment was captured on a 10 × 15 centimetre glass plate – not on film. The preserved envelope also bears the words “AXEL, bark, Konstapel”, an unusually precise note that has accompanied the negative for more than a century.

Unique poster with an elderly sail stitcher sitting and sewing with a pipe in his mouth, while looking out beyond the photo. The man is sitting on board the ship AXEL in Gothenburg harbor in 1919. The photograph was taken by Leo Bonsdorff.
