Canvas with one of Carl Larsson's fantastic portraits of Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf, from 1902.
In 1909, Selma Lagerlöf became the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Selma also became the first woman in The Swedish Academy and one of the original members of the The Society of the Nine. Selma is mainly known for her three works Saga of Gösta Berling , Nils Holgerssons' wonderful journey through Sweden and Jerusalem .
Selma and Carl Larsson had sympathy for each other. Among other things, she had supported him after August Strindberg's attack in A new blue book 1908.
Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time, known for his characteristic watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life. This portrait was used, among other things, as a newspaper cover when Selma was elected to the Swedish Academy.
