When the Reader Keeps the Rhyme Going
Elsa Beskow turned the story into a small game between book and child: in every verse, the final word is left open for the reader to find the rhyme. The original edition appeared in 1934 – a picture book where the read-aloud continues beyond the printed page.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful illustration from Elsa Beskow's children's book "The Adventures of Sessalätt" which was first published in 1928.

The book is about the little princess Sessalätt who sets out on a journey filled with trials and encounters with different people and environments. The story is about courage, friendship and growing through experiences.

The picture shows a scene where a king with a crown and a red robe walks through an avenue of trees. He holds the hand of the princess, who is dressed in a light blue dress and crown. A small dachshund runs beside them

Elsa Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator (1874–1953), known for his beloved children's books and richly detailed illustrations. She created fairy tales where nature and everyday life are mixed with fantasy, such as The Adventures of Sessalätt. Beskow is considered one of the Nordic countries' most significant children's book illustrators. Explore more classics Elsa Beskow here.
