The story behind the motif
Poster of the painting Ships a Sea created in 1844. In this historic painting, the artist, Joseph Mallord William Turner, expresses the power of nature and the heroism of man seen from the perspective of a romantic painter.
On one of the ships we see a man in a white uniform standing and waving confidently. While scholars are unsure of the exact historical event that Turner describes, one likely interpretation is that the man depicted here is Dutch naval officer Cornelis Van Tromp, who was dismissed from naval service in 1666 after failing to obey orders.
William Turner is best known for his romantic landscape paintings, whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism.
