In the 1920s, Slussen was one of Stockholm’s worst traffic bottlenecks: bridge openings for shipping simultaneously halted trams, cars and pedestrians. Nils Ericsson’s lock was replaced in 1935, but significant parts remain beneath the stairs between Karl Johans torg and Slussplan—since then serving as an additional outlet for Lake Mälaren.
