The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Kamisaka Sekka’s color woodblock print Small Waves from 1909–1910.
The motif depicts stylized waves moving between flat landforms in muted tones of beige and gray, with touches of gold and silver. The simplified form gives the image a calm and almost abstract expression.
The print is part of Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa). Sekka drew inspiration from the Rinpa tradition and reinterpreted older Japanese motifs with a modern sense of graphic design.
Artist: Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) | Created: 1909–1910.
Frame not included.
