The beginning of a maritime series
At Hvasser in 1882, Christian Krohg began a group of subjects to which he would return into the 1920s: the seascapes. Hardt le is considered the first in the series – an early step away from his better-known social realist paintings.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Smile Hard" by the Norwegian artist Christian Krohg (1852-1925) who is known for his realistic depictions of life in Norway, especially in marine paintings and socially engaged works. 

The painting was made in 1882 and depicts a man in rain gear steering a boat through a stormy sea. The background shows wild, turquoise waves that enhance the dramatic and intense mood of the work.

Christian Krohg studied at art academies in Oslo and Paris and became a leading figure in Norwegian realism. Krohg was particularly noted for his marine paintings and portraits, as well as his works that highlighted social issues, such as The alcoholic (1885). In addition to his artistry, he was also a committed journalist and writer who fought for workers' rights and social justice.
