The Scratch That Forced a Retake
Three weeks into filming in the archipelago, a scratch was discovered in the film negative. The damage had ruined almost three quarters of the material, forcing Ingmar Bergman and his team to reshoot large parts of Summer with Monika. A technical fault in the raw footage thus became an unexpected extra round behind one of his early films.

The story behind the motif
Poster with an illustrated poster for the film Sommeren med Monika , directed by Ingmar Bergman. The film is about Monika and Harry who escape the boredom of their everyday life and spend a short summer of happiness in the archipelago.

The film is from 1953 with Lars Ekborg and Harriet Andersson in the lead roles. The film is based on the novel Sommaren med Monika (1951) written by Per Anders Fogelström. The film premiered on February 9, 1953.
