An Emergency Solution in the Air
The Mark IX was not an entirely new design but a rapid conversion made when the German Fw 190 had put the British at an uncomfortable disadvantage. Rolls-Royce’s two-stage-supercharged Merlin 61 was installed in new Mark V airframes, and the first Mark IX sortie was flown over Le Havre on 28 July 1942.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph of two people standing by a model aircraft: Spitfire Mark IX.

The Spitfire Mk IX was originally a temporary badge designed to counter the model: FW 190 in 1942. However, it actually became the most produced version of the Spitfire. The use of the two-stage supercharger gave a quantum leap in performance, especially above 20,000 feet and provided effective opposition to the latest German fighters of the time.
