The story behind the motif
Poster with the beautiful painting Spring, created in 1838 by the artist Cephas Giovanni Thompson. He was a successful, largely self-taught, itinerant portrait painter from the early 19th century in the United States.
Thompson painted Spring in New York City, shortly after establishing a studio in the University Building, at the easternmost corner of Washington Square. The painting and its companion, Autumn , were exhibited at the Apollo Association in January 1839.
Capitalizing on the vogue for allegorical and romantic portraiture, Thompson constructed sentimentalized visions of young women. In the painting of the beautiful woman, we see her adorned in the latest style of the season and placed in a lush garden complete with the neoclassical marble urn. Her poignant gaze and casual demeanor are complemented by Thompson's light-infused handling of color.
