The story behind the motif

The deer is in the center with a look of terror in its eyes while the dogs attack from all sides. Jean-Baptiste Oudry was a prominent French artist of the 18th century, particularly known for his animal portraits and hunting scenes. He was court painter to Louis XV and created several works that documented the king's interest in hunting, often with great realism and decorative finesse.
