The story behind the motif
Poster with a painting from 1864 by the Norwegian landscape painter Peder Balke. The dramatic, steep and inaccessible mountain formations along the northern Norwegian coast impressed Peder Balke during his first long trip to the northern parts of Norway in 1832.
In the painting " Stetind in fog " the jagged mountain peak seems to resemble a spire towering above the waves washing ashore. Balke revisited the motif of Stetind in several other paintings over the decades.
In addition to being a prolific artist, Balke was also very involved in social causes. An expression of this commitment was the so-called Balkeby (Balkestad), a residential area for workers that he built on his property in Christiania.
