From the Palace to the Museum
As early as 1740, just nineteen years after Oudry painted it, the painting was acquired for Stockholm Palace. When Nationalmuseum took over the collections of Kongl. Museum in 1866, the painting came with them – an unusually well-documented journey from royal palace to state museum.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Still Life with Fruit and Vegetables by Jean-Baptiste Oudry from the year 1721.

In this painting, Oudry has depicted a detailed and colorful composition of various fruits and vegetables. Still life paintings during this period were often more than just a representation of natural objects; they were also a form of symbolism and social commentary. Fruits and vegetables could represent prosperity, abundance and even moral messages, depending on which objects were chosen and how they were arranged.

Artist: Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) | Created: 1721.
