The story behind the motif
A classic Christmas poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow. The illustration was published in Saga of the year year 1927 and called January.
Årets Saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.
In the book it says: Happy New Year! The bell rings heavily: "Now the New Year is here"! Thank you dear old years, which stand so tired on the threshold and will soon be a memory! New Years, bring joy and sun and spring and a grateful mind! Thirteenth day: Early we get out of bed, and in long shirts we walk, like wise men went to Bethlehem in the past, singing we went: "No day appears yet, the stars in the sky are shining." Twentieth day: Then Christmas really ends for all of us, because on the twentieth day of Knut we will dance the Christmas away, loot the tree together. Little fir, don't be sad, maybe this spring you'll get to stand in the middle of the Walborg flame!
Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is probably one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
