From old-fashioned to beloved
The painting was already considered old-fashioned in artistic circles when it was created. Ferdinand von Wright held on to the brothers’ scientifically precise approach to nature at a time when tastes had begun to move in another direction. Paradoxically, that very precision helped make the work Finland’s most copied artwork – from wall hangings to postage stamps.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Fighting Capercaillie", created in 1886 by Ferdinand von Wright.

The painting depicts a dramatic scene of two roosters with their feathers raised in protest. The roosters appear to be fighting for dominance, and their body language – tense feathers, bared beaks and powerful claws – conveys the intensity of their conflict.

Von Wright was known for his ability to capture the details of animals in a way that was both artistically and scientifically accurate. A self-taught artist, he became a leading figure in Finnish naturalism, especially in bird painting. During his time, he had a great influence on both the Finnish and international art scenes.

"Fighting Feathered Cocks" is an excellent example of his style, which combined careful observation of nature with a dramatic portrayal of the animals.

Artist: Ferdinand von Wright | Created: 1886.
