The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Utagawa Hiroshige's color woodblock print Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake from 1857.
The motif captures a sudden downpour over the Shin-Ohashi Bridge in Edo. People hurry across the bridge as the rain falls in dense diagonal lines and the river stretches out beneath the dark sky.
The work is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, in which Hiroshige depicted the city's sites during different seasons and weather conditions. The dramatic rain shower has made the motif one of the best-known in the series.
