Saved Before Demolition
The painting probably belonged to a suite commissioned in 1573 by Emperor Maximilian II as a gift for Elector August of Saxony. After the suite disappeared from the Dresden collections, it reportedly resurfaced around 1950 with an art dealer, who had found it in a pavilion shortly before demolition.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting " Summer " by the Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593), who is known for his imaginative portraits in which he uses objects such as fruit, flowers and books to recreate faces.

The painting "Summer" is part of the famous "The Four Seasons" series created for the Habsburg court. Each season symbolizes a phase in human life, with summer representing a man in his "prime".

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan and worked in Italy and Austria, where he was part of the imperial court under Emperor Maximilian II. His artwork reflected the Renaissance interest in natural science, botany, and zoology, and his detailed depictions of nature were part of the scientific developments of this period.
