The story behind the motif
Poster with the beautiful painting Sunrise created in 1872-1873 by Claude Monet - a historically famous French artist. The motif is the industrial port of Le Havre on the northern coast of France.
In the picture we see a brilliant orange sunrise that sparkles on the grey-blue water. Barely distinguishable through a cool haze, we see boats around the sailboat in the center of the picture. Painted in the spring of 1873, when the country was struggling to rebuild after the Franco-Prussian War, this sunrise may be a metaphor for a new day dawning in France.
Monet is considered one of the pioneers of Impressionism in the second half of the 19th century, along with Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Frédéric Bazille, Alfred Sisley, Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro. Monet's painting Sunrise (English: Impression ) (1872-73) gave name to the new movement.
