A Whole Night at the Olympia
In 1899, Taverne Olympia sold not just dinner but an entire night: the poster’s text promised to remain open all night, with a ladies’ orchestra and “montagnes russes”—the French term for a roller coaster. It was printed at Imprimerie Chaix in Paris and catalogued with a posting date of 16 December that same year.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Taverne Olympia created in 1893 by French artist Jules Chéret (1836- 1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.

The poster shows a man and a woman in elegant attire. The man is wearing a tailcoat, and the woman is wearing a vibrant red dress. They are both toasting each other, giving a sense of celebration and togetherness.

Chéret's poster Taverne Olympia is an advertisement for a restaurant or entertainment establishment called Taverne Olympia in Paris, and the poster depicts a lively and festive atmosphere, which is typical of Chéret's style.

A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
