The story behind the motif
Beautiful canvas with the painting The Artist's Wife, created in 1897 by the Danish painter Laurits Andersen Ring.
LA Ring married in 1896, the year before he painted this portrait of his wife Sigrid Kähler. At the time he was 42 and she was 22. It is therefore possible to interpret this picture as a declaration of love to the artist's pregnant wife, with the promise of spring as a symbol of the completion of love.
The image reflects newfound happiness, hope and flowering plants, all gathered in one place. This may symbolize a theme of life and death—a theme that Ring, an atheist, expressed in many works. Here he takes up the theme by contrasting Sigrid's stomach with shriveled, gnarled branches. A reminder of the fragility that also includes the burgeoning life that is felt in both man and nature.
