The circus’s living bronze
They called themselves the Golden Gymnasts – but in Barnum & Bailey’s 1910 programme, the Apollo Trio were presented as golden statue acrobats. The act combined feats of strength with poses borrowed from the art of sculpture: an early circus version of living statues rather than an ordinary acrobatic act.
