A Beach with the Wrong Name
When the painting was acquired in the United States in 1866, it was called Beach near Scheveningen, as though it depicted the Dutch coast. Only later was it linked to Villerville in Normandy. Its early American provenance gives the work a small geographical mystery, long before its journey to the National Gallery of Art.
