Commissioned by a Cotton Spinner
The painting was commissioned by Henry McConnel, a successful cotton spinner in Manchester. He asked Turner to create it as a counterpart to a harbour scene from northern England, where coal is loaded by moonlight—a private pair setting the light of Venice against the fire and smoke of industry.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the wonderful painting The Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore , painted by the British artist William Turner in 1834.

The picture is of a glittering canal in Venice, lined with sailboats and gondolas filled with people. In the background we see an ivory-white church with a tall bell tower to the left. A row of buildings can be seen along the canal to the right of the picture.

William Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. During his lifetime , he traveled around Europe, among other things. First in Switzerland and France, where he studied at the Louvre in Paris. He also visited Italy and above all Venice on several occasions.

Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) | Created: 1834.
