The story behind the motif
Poster with the wonderful painting The Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore , painted by the British artist William Turner in 1834.
The picture is of a glittering canal in Venice, lined with sailboats and gondolas filled with people. In the background we see an ivory-white church with a tall bell tower to the left. A row of buildings can be seen along the canal to the right of the picture.
William Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. During his lifetime , he traveled around Europe, among other things. First in Switzerland and France, where he studied at the Louvre in Paris. He also visited Italy and above all Venice on several occasions.
