A Portrait as Heroic Tale
When von Rosen exhibited the painting in Gothenburg in 1886, the critic Karl Warburg read it as an image of humanity’s struggle with nature. The Danish art historian Julius Lange called it heroic painting that could make a Swedish heart beat faster.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting by the Swedish artist Georg von Rosen from 1886. The name of the work is The Explorer AE Nordenskiöld and portrays the discoverer of the same name (Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld). Georg von Rosen was a Swedish artist and count. Nordenskiöld was a Finnish-Swedish nobleman raised to the rank of baron in Sweden, geologist, mineralogist, polar explorer, explorer, member of the Swedish Academy and also a member of Sweden's Riksdag.
