A Window with a Manifesto
Three years before painting this work, Munch wrote that he no longer wanted to paint people who merely read or knitted, but living people who loved and suffered. The quiet tradition of interior painting thus acquired a new charge: in his work, the window became a recurring way of making the everyday psychological.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting The Girl by the Window by Edvard Munch. The work was painted in 1893 and shows a woman standing by an open window and looking out over the city in the night light. She is wearing a white nightgown and her hair is in a bun.

The language of color and form in this painting such as the steep angle of the floor and the deep shadows create an enigmatic scene. Loosely applied brown, purple and blue tones evoke a sense of melancholy and anticipation. The window acts as a symbolic barrier that separates the interior from the outside world. The sense of mystery is deepened and complicated by the fact that we cannot see the expression on the girl's face, nor do we know what she is secretly observing.

Edvard Munch is Norway's foremost artist and became a source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch's works are inspired by existential themes such as melancholy, jealousy and anxiety, but also the Norwegian nature and places where he lived.
